Renewables Lead, Sunrun Powers Grid

Graph of Power Sources

It is a landmark time for energy. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), renewables are officially set to overtake coal as the world’s top source of electricity by mid-2026 at the latest. In fact, some data suggests that in the first half of 2025, renewable generation already briefly nudged past coal for the first time in history.

This shift isn't just about massive wind farms or dams; it's increasingly driven by decentralized, residential power.

The Rise of the "Virtual Power Plant"

As the world pivots, companies like Sunrun are fundamentally changing their identity. While long known as the leading residential solar installer in the U.S., Sunrun has evolved into a "grid services" provider.

 * Virtual Power Plants (VPPs): Sunrun now manages over 100,000 customers in its distributed power plant programs. By networking thousands of home batteries together, they can discharge energy back into the grid during peak demand (like a summer heatwave), essentially acting as a single, massive power plant without the smokestacks.

 * Storage-First Strategy: The company has shifted focus toward Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). In late 2025, they reported a 23% year-over-year increase in storage capacity, signaling that homeowners are no longer just looking for panels—they want to control their own energy "reserves."

 * Infrastructure Partnerships: Recently, Sunrun closed a $500 million joint venture with HASI to finance 40,000 "home power plants," highlighting how institutional capital is now flowing into residential rooftops rather than just utility-scale projects.

This "Age of Electricity" means that by 2030, the IEA expects renewables and nuclear combined to provide half of all global power.

The transition is moving from the "alternative" category to the "primary" category, with companies like Sunrun proving that a garage with a battery can be just as vital to the grid as a traditional power station.
