New Jersey’s New Energy Reality: Hard Choices and the Path to Independence

“It won’t be easy, and hard choices have to be made.” With those words, Governor Mikie Sherrill ushered in a new era for New Jersey energy during her January 2026 inaugural address. Facing a projected 20% spike in electricity costs driven by regional grid instability and soaring demand from data centers, the Governor declared a "State of Emergency on Utility Costs."   The administration’s "all-of-the-above" strategy is a high-wire act. By signing Executive Orders #1 and #2, Sherrill has moved to freeze pending rate hikes and issue immediate bill credits to families. But she also acknowledged that short-term freezes aren’t enough. To ensure long-term reliability, the state is fast-tracking solar solicitations and modernizing gas plants—a move aimed at preventing the "ghost loads" of the digital age from dimming Jersey’s lights.
